Position: Senior Mining Engineer

Our client was formed to exploit an Iron Ore mine and concentrator in Schefferville, QC on the border of Newfoundland and Labrador. They are a joint venture ranked in the top 10 steel producers. They employ over 80,000 people in five continents and boasts a revenue in excess of $20 billion for the 2010 fiscal year. The current project consists of upgrading high grade hematite ore with a feasibility study on a much larger project underway. The current project is a fly-in, fly-out operation.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mine Engineering and eligible membership as P. Eng.
- Proficient in scheduling in iron ore, gold or base metals and have exposure to one or more mine planning softwares (i.e. Vulcan, Mine Sight and Surpac)
- 5+ years supervisory experience
- Good understanding of standards of safety
- Strong leadership, communications and organizational skills
- Ideally experience in a start-up environment
- Experience in administration of ISO
- Experience in a remote location and exposure to dealing with aboriginal communities
- Experience in managing staff in a fly-in, fly-out setting and in unionized or non-unionized environments
- Highly developed planning, analytical and problem solving skills
- Bilingualism (English-French) an asset
Expected Roles and Responsibilities:
- Initially will be working with project team & consultants to become familiar with the project and to detail short term/long term mine plans for start-up execution
- Will be involved in the start of the mine operation
- Conduct regular and thorough inspections of all mine areas to ensure compliance with safety and environment standards and regulations
- Monitor mine performances and final product quality and undertake corrective actions, whenever necessary, to adhere to the product specifications
- Promote at high performance culture and lead a team to embrace innovation and continuous improvement
- Oversee preparation and control of the mine’s operating budget, to ensure that cost targets are met
- Develop, maintain and improve mine operating systems, to ensure that all production and OHS performances are as per the budget
- Monitor, through appropriately developed reporting systems, mine performance and recommend, plan and implement future optimization strategies
- Based on the customer specifications, ensure that blended ore is delivered to feed the plant
- Assist the General Manager in developing the overall business strategy, particularly in regard to development and improvements in costs and product quality
- Promote a working environment which ensure that employees and contractors gain new skills and achieve their full potential by developing and implementing effective training and mentoring programs
- Manage an employee performance programme to ensure optimum employee performance
- Promote a Continuous Improvement culture
- Liaise with different government departments
- Be pro-active in all aspects of operational safety, efficient utilization of the resources, Continuous Improvement initiatives and encourage teamwork across the departments.
