Our client was formed to exploit an Iron Ore mine and concentrator in Schefferville, QC on the border of Newfoundland and Labrador.  They are a joint venture ranked in the top 10 steel producers.  They employ over 80,000 people in five continents and boasts a revenue in excess of $20 billion for the 2010 fiscal year.  The current project consists of upgrading high grade hematite ore with a feasibility study on a much larger project underway.  The current project is a fly-in, fly-out operation.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Engineering, or College degree in Occupational Health and Safety with considerable experience in the field
  • 5+ years functional experience in mining or construction safety and health
  • Knowledge of: Principles and practices of evaluating and implementing a comprehensive safety program; training techniques; basic principles of risk management; accident prevention; laws and regulations applicable to employee safety; Occupational Health Code; benefit analysis; industrial safety practices; safety hazard assessment, accident investigations and safety inspections
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills
  • Bilingualism (French-English) an asset

Expected Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare health and safety strategies and policies
  • Assist with safety planning on the construction site
  • Provide guidance and site assessment during construction phase
  • Provide feedback to Project Management on areas where potential improvements can be implemented during the construction phase
  • Carry out risk assessments and recommend how risks can be reduced
  • Outlines safe operational procedures which identify and take account of all relevant hazards
  • Develop, implement and manage the Prevention Program and direct and coordinate the participation of departments within that program; create or modify safety policies and update Safety Manual as needed
  • Conduct regular safety audits of departments, including the inspection of facilities, worksites, equipment, work practices, and safety devices to ensure compliance with required workplace safety standards, regulations and policy
  • Serve as safety resource to all departments and assist departments in complying with safety standards; provide consultation, guidance, and technical assistance on matters related to workplace safety, including assisting in the development of department-specific safety manuals and forms and advising of proper recordkeeping requirements
  • Meet regularly with Risk Management staff to ensure appropriate action is taken in compliance with safety policies to correct hazardous conditions which result in workers’ compensation claims
  • Prepare and provide in-house training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks
  • Monitor and report on all incidents and accidents and produce statistics fro management
  • Ensure the safe installation of equipment
  • Advise on a range of specialist areas (i.e. fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise and occupational diseases)
