Position: Chief Mine Engineer

The Chief Mine Engineer is responsible for an engineering adminstrative function, directing both professional and technical groups in interelated engineering responsibilities. The incumbent is responsible for departmental output, performances. Determines through dialogue and investigations opportunities in reaching program objectives.

The position is accountable for the coordination and delivery of all engineering services to the mine, including those of special resource groups, such that these services are of the highest professional standards, meet all appropriate health, safety and environmental regulations and also meet the goals and objectives of the organization. The Chief Mine Engineer leads the annual site budget and life of mine (LOM) planning processes and is accountable for ensuring that technical systems, processes and standards at the mine are consistent with company best practices.

The position is responsible for timely work plans, schedules, budgets, administration, reports, cost control, safety, execution and quality control which meet the LOM, capital objectives and long range economic plans.

He leads his technical team and coordinates activities with the required disciplines on engineering, scheduling, budgeting, resource planning, cost reconciliation, recovery plans and reporting with the principal objective that operational key milestone dates and deliverables are met both in a cost effective and timely manner.

He assists the management team in steeering and directing coordinated activities to ensure that planned operational objectives are met.

The incumbent assists in the management of the operation or projects and acts as the manager on duty when scheduled.

The Chief Mine Engineer is responsible for providing the highest level of leadership to the Engineering technical team while developing, coaching and guiding.

The position is accountable for meeting production schedule milestone dates and budget objectives which include all processes directly and indirectly related to the operations. The position is key in ensuring integration of direct and indirect accountabilities as services required to meet the site business targets

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recommends a vision and strategy for achievement and maintenance of departmental objectives.
  • Communicates approved competitive business plan to the organization.
  • Meets all process safety, quality, and environmental protection regulations in compliance with First Nickel policies and MOL and MOE regulations and standards.
  • Ensures proper staffing with highly skilled and competent personnel ensuring safe functionality through a disciplined hiring process, employee development and training and performance management in accordnace with FNI policy.
  • Presents production results and forecasts on a monthly, quarterly basis.
  • Assists in the development OF RECOVERY plans with the production group.
  • Keeps VP Operations informed of potential problem areas and recommends reasonable and viable solutions.
  • Oversees contractor/ consultant as related to engineering activities.
  • Supports capital project development activities.
  • Ensures forecasted production targets are met.
  • Ensures ongoing optimization of resources and performances.
  • Ensures prodction costs and schedule reconciliation is conducted jointly with production and accounting on a monthly basis .

Qualifications:

  • Certified professional mining engineer in the province of Ontario
  • Demonstrated career development path in mining engineering and Mining operations.
  • Ability to handle stress of continual deadlines and to work without

Working Conditions:

  • A greater portion (80%) of the candidates’ time is set in an office environment
  • A smaller portion (15%) of the candidates’ time is in the field (surface or underground) and may be subjected to warm / cold and wet environment.
  • Five (5%) of his time is spent on reviews with suppliers and contractors and / or on site visits at other minesites conducting reconnaisance.
